Yamal LNG Project, Russia
The Yamal LNG (liquefied natural gas) project consists of the development of natural gas extraction fields, including a liquefied natural gas plant, storage and marine loading facility.
The project is located on the Yamal Peninsula in northern Russia. Once completed, Yamal LNG will be one of the largest facilities of its kind ever built in the Arctic, incorporating the sea port of Sabetta, a new airport, and a power plant. The liquefied natural gas is intended for European and Asian markets and will be transported by ships which are designed and built specifically for this project.
The main environmental and social issues of the Yamal LNG project include:
- Impacts on natural environment and biodiversity
- Air emissions, including GHG emissions.
