The present route is of strategic importance as it will tie together the northern, central and eastern parts of the country.

The project includes:

  • Railway development between the cities of Awash and Weldia in Ethiopia.

The trains will run on electricity. The railway is expected to have positive effects on the environment and also contribute to social development. For example, diesel-powered road transport is expected to be transferred to the railway. Most of the area where the railway line will be drawn is sparsely populated. In a few places, the railroad will be drawn through or adjacent to sensitive natural environments.

The Ethiopian railway project is classified as a category A-project. Additional information on the environmental and social impacts are available in the following web link and documents:
