The project includes the construction and operation of an underground copper mine located 25 km southwest of the city Kolwezi in southern DRC. The main purpose of the project is to produce copper, which, for example, is needed for electric vehicles as part of the transition to a low carbon economy.

The project has a preliminary classification as category A and its key environmental and social risks and impacts relate to the following key areas: surface and ground water, management of community safety and health risks, emergency preparedness and response, as well as resettlement. The original Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) of the project in French is available in the following document:

EKN will conduct an Environmental and Social (E&S) due diligence of the project based on the existing ESIA. EKN will also be engaged in close dialogue with involved parties to ensure that risks are managed in line with international standards.

The information was published on EKN's website www.ekn.se on August 20th, 2020. Comments on the project can be made within at least 30 days. This procedure is in accordance with the OECD Recommendation on Common Approaches for Export Credit Agencies (ECAs).
