KIAD - Electrified railway, Türkiye
The Swedish Export Credit Agency (EKN) is considering a guarantee for financing of equipment to the General Directorate of Infrastructure Investment's (AYGM) ”Kars-Iğdır-Aralık-Dilucu High Standard Electrified Railway Project” (KIAD), which refers to a 223.9 km electrified railway for passenger and freight traffic between Kars, Kars Province och Dilucu, Iğdır Province.
The project involves construction of electrified railway with associated bridges, tunnels, viaducts etcetera and five stations, a siding and six switchyards. The railway will connect to the existing railway between Kars, Tbilisi, and Baku. The project is intended to reduce the dependence on road transport in the region as well as to further link Turkey and Europe with the Caucasus, Central Asia and China.
The project has a preliminary classification as category A. The key environmental and social risks and impacts from the project relate to land acquisition and resettlement, labour and working conditions, health and safety of nearby communities, biodiversity and transboundary impacts on rivers. EKN conducts Environmental and Social (E&S) due diligence of the project based on the existing ESIA. EKN is engaged in close dialogue with involved parties to ensure that risks are managed in line with international standards.
