EKN is considering a guarantee for the financing of equipment for ”Karuma – Tororo double circuit transmission line”. The project includes transmission line as well as the installation of substations.
The project consists of the construction of a new 346 km 400 kV double circuit transmission line from Tororo in western Uganda to Karuma on the border with Kenya. In addition to the development of the transmission lines, the proposed construction activities include the construction of new greenfield substations, as well as upgrades of two existing substations.
EKN has provisionally classified the project as Category A. The potential social and environmental impacts primarily relate to land acquisition and resettlement, working conditions, health and safety for nearby communities, biodiversity, and impacts on land and water. EKN conducts Environmental and Social (E&S) due diligence of the project based on the existing ESIA. EKN is engaged in close dialogue with involved parties to ensure that risks are managed in line with international standards.
